Sanders

A combination belt and disc sander is a versatile stationary tool used in the woodshop for rapid material removal, precise edge shaping, and accurate angle grinding. The continuous vertical or horizontal belt is ideal for flattening straight edges, smoothing long curves, and quickly paring down end grain on larger boards. Meanwhile, the spinning disc provides a flat, stable surface for squaring up short end grain, sanding precise bevels, or shaping convex curves when held against the downward-rotating side of the wheel.

An oscillating spindle sander is used for sanding inside radii and curves. It is an oscillating sander in that it rotates, and the spindle moves up and down at the same time. The spindle sander is used for rough sanding. The sanding spindle is approximately 80 grit. It is used to remove material after roughing out a piece on the band saw or reciprocating saws.

Safety Tips

Personal Prep & Workspace Safety
  • Always wear safety glasses/goggles when operating the sanders
  • Roll up loose sleeves past your elbows and ensure no loose clothing, lanyards, or jewelry can catch in moving parts.
  • Do not sand items with fresh glue; wait 24 hours for glue to cure completely.
  • Remain at the machine after turning it off until it has come to a complete stop.
  • Keep the work surface and surrounding floor area clean and free of sawdust and debris when finished.
General Safe Operations
  • Keep your fingers at least 1 inch away from the moving abrasive surface at all times.
  • Do not sand small, irregular pieces by hand—use a clamp, vise, or special holding fixture.
  • Ensure stock is not touching the abrasive surface before turning the machine on.
  • Allow the sander to reach full speed before starting your cut.
  • Keep stock flat on the table and keep material moving continuously across the abrasive to avoid clogging, loading, or burning the wood.
  • Sand at a moderate rate using light pressure; do not force material into the machine.
  • Use a rubber cleaning stick/eraser while the machine is running to clean the abrasive surface as needed.
Belt & Disc Sander Specifics
  • Ensure belt covers/guards are in place and the belt tracks centered on the drum. Do not operate with torn paper.
  • Sand only on the side of the disc moving DOWN toward the table (the left side on counter-clockwise discs).
Oscillating Spindle Sander Specifics
  • Verify that the correct spindle size (1/2" to 4") and matching table insert size are properly installed.
  • Apply light pressure against the spindle's counter-clockwise rotation by moving your stock in a clockwise direction.
  • Remove the spindle and table insert after use and return the spindle to its storage rack.
