What should you do before using woodworking machines?

Only use woodworking machines that you have been trained to use properly and safely.
Read the owner's manual carefully.
Make sure you understand instructions before attempting to use any tool or machine. Always ask questions if you have any doubts about doing the work safely.

What safety procedures should you follow when using woodworking machines?

Always wear safety glasses.
Wear dust masks when using equipment producing significant dust.
Wear hearing protection suitable for the noise level; if you can't hear someone speak from three feet away, the noise is too high.
Use gloves to protect from splinters, but do not wear them near rotating blades.
Wear protective, closed-toe footwear.
Ensure machine guards are in place, working condition, and properly adjusted.
Remove keys and adjusting wrenches before turning on power.
Inspect stock for nails, staples, or loose knots; use a metal detector if in doubt.
Ensure start/stop buttons are in easy reach.
Keep cutting tools clean, sharp, and in good working order.
Turn off and unplug the power cord before cleaning, adjusting, or repairing.
Use "push sticks" and jigs to keep hands out of the cutting line.
Clamp and secure all work pieces.
Ensure good, glare-free lighting on the work piece and controls.
Maintain sufficient floor space around equipment to move safely.

What should you avoid when using woodworking machines?

Do not wear loose clothing, neckties, rings, bracelets, or jewelry that can become entangled.
Avoid awkward hand positions where a slip could push your hand into the blade.
Do not stand directly behind stock during cutting or planing to avoid kick-back injury.
Do not remove sawdust from the cutting head by hand while the machine is running.
Do not leave machines running unattended; wait for a complete stop.
Do not attempt to free a stalled blade without turning off the power.
Do not distract or startle an operator.
